Microcredentialreihe – Introduction to Radio Frequency Engineering
The course describes challenges and techniques for analog frontends in radio frequency systems in the GHz frequency range. It is guided by the overall case study of a communication system (ground segment) for geostationary satellites.
It is divided into three Master Nuggets with a duration of three weeks (1 ECTS credit per nugget), plus a hands-on, on-campus design exercise (one day, 1 ECTS credit).
Despite the predominantly digital nature of microwave and millimeter-wave communication and sensing systems, the antenna-facing frontend is analog. Issues such as electronic noise or nonlinearities in the analog processing change often mean the difference between success or failure of a project.
The course starts with a fundamental look at common challenges balancing designing for low-noise on the one hand and high linearity of the other hand.
We then progress to common design techniques for multi-stage systems, with an emphasis on scattering parameters, the Smith Chart, and matching for either maximum power transfer or low noise.
The final nugget takes an application-oriented look at electromagnetic theory, waveguides and transmission lines, as well as common antenna types.
Nugget No. 1: RF Frontend Challenges and Principles (230 €)
Nugget No. 2: Multi-stage RF systems (230 €)
Nugget No. 3: Transmission lines and antennas (230 €)
Integrative Design Exercise (on campus) (350 €)

This certificate course is particularly appropriate as a preparatory course for persons who plan to take an extra-occupational master’s programme in the area of engineering and have no prior knowledge in the field of »Radio Frequency Engineering«.
The online part of the study programme takes place in self-study and in the form of group work. For the self-study part of the programme, video lectures with detailed information about the contents and an elaborated script are offered. The script has been developed especially for extra-occupational learners in regard to the didactic concept of Ulm University. It contains breaks for independent study, multiple and single choice tests, quizzes, exercises, etc.
Your mentor will offer online seminars in periodic intervals. These seminars will help you to handle the exercises and work on the learning topics.
An online forum for exchange with the other students will also be available.
It is strongly recommended to have basics of electrical engineering, advanced mathematics (complex calculus, basics of vector analysis), analogue circuits, signals and systems.
